El Guayo captured

It´s a rare occurrence when we can say that it´s been a good month for law enforcement in Guatemala, so lets take a moment to appreciate this achievement this month, as the chances are within a month or two we´ll relegating the law back to the Flopping section of the magazine when we find something new to moan about. But this month we can at least bring you a positive update on the not-so-positive story of the massacre in Salcajá in June this year, in which a gang stormed the local police station in broad daylight and shot dead eight police officers. October brought us the news that the purported leader of the raid, a drug trafficker known as “Guayo Cano”,  was captured and arrested in Tuxtla, Mexico and has been transferred to Guatemala, signaling the successful completion of “Operation Dignity” by the armed forces and police of Guatemala .

Fairground Tragedy

The sketchy health & safety standards of the fairground rides that arrive to Xela for the Fería and any other local festival have been somewhat of a running joke over the years. Indeed, for many half of the fun and thrills from the rides come from the fact that you´re never 100% sure if your carriage is going to be the one that finally falls off and goes crashing to the ground But even despite all the rickety creaks, you always came off in one piece. So it was with horror that many read the news this month that two cousins died at the fairground in Zone 9 when the carriage they were riding aboard one of the rollercoasters came detached and flew off the rails. Many people, rightfully, will now be thinking twice before boarding their next fairground ride in Xela. Our thoughts and condolences go to the family.

DON’T MISS THIS: SOLAR FESTIVAL

Get your glowsticks at the ready for XelaWho´s event of the month for November which goes to Solar Festival: Xela´s very first international electronic music festival. Headlining will be Guatemalan´s biggest DJ, Francis Davila, who has shared the stage with the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto. Also on the line-up are Belgium´s Mr Yoso, who will be playing house, latin house and minimal, and Darrell Johnson from the UK with his blend of Electro, Techno & House. Joining them will be a host of other national DJs providing crowds with a range of  electronic music genres. Top that with a top quality sound system and audio-visual show courtesy of Casa Instrumental and we have ourselves quite an event to look forward to in November. The event will be held on the 16th of November in the car park of the Centro Comercial Las Americas (across the road from the Zoo and Wall-Mart), and runs from 4pm to 1am. Check out the back page of this issue of XelaWho for more information and our map insert for locations of ticket outlets.
