Youth Consciousness

Social Media was filled with outrage as an image of someone vandalising the Chocoyos bridge in Zone 1. As a result a group of masked youths surprised the locals of Quetzaltenango when they erased the graffiti on the bridge, which was built in 1822. The youths, who belong to a group called Gix, are design students at a private university. “We were concerned to see the image of  someone vandalising the bridge and nobody did anything about it” said one of the masked youths. Users of social networks have demanded that the authorities investigate what happened and give a future solution, because the bridge is part of the history of the Quetzaltenango. A video of this amazing act can be found online. Simply go to youtube and search Limpieza “Los Chocoyos”- GIX

Education

A recent evaluation by the Ministry of Education has discovered that most of the urban schools in Xela cannot provide basic services for their students. The majority of the schools have outdated sanitation, a lack of cooks for the students lunches, and some do not have enough desks for all of the students. Many schools indicated to the Ministry of Education that they simply lack the funds to make the necessary changes for their students. Allan Bloom said “Education is the movement from the darkness to the light”. It seems from this recent study that the education system still has a long way to go to achieve this.

Semana Santa

Its getting hotter! Haven’t you noticed? That must mean one thing. Semana Santa is just around the corner. If you are looking for some ideas how to spend your time, then we have some suggestions just for you.

Those looking to stay in Xela, will be treated to days of spectacular processions. Many of these will pass through Xelas Central Park, but make sure to get there early if you want to get a good spot!

The beach is always a popular spot at Semana Santa with many people escaping the city looking to soak up the rays. Remember your sun block!

For the music lovers Semana Santa is a truly fantastic time. This year has a great selection of live events. April 1st sees the return of the Empire Music Festival in Puerto Quetzal. This is the 2nd year of the festival and headliners include Calvin Harris and Jack Novak. The Brahva Summer fest (Saturday 4th) in Puerto San Jose will welcome Carlos Vives and Enrique Inglesias. Finally Panajachel and the Gallo Evolution festival. This year the line up includes Cultura Profetica and Bohemia Suburbana. If you love reggae music and cheap beer (and lets be honest, who doesn’t) then this is the place for you.  All lineups and prices can be found on todoticket.com

Please remember that Semana Santa is a popular time, so please make sure to call ahead to reserve accommodation.

Have Fun!
