Spotlight On: A Series on Culture & the Arts

majuana“Spotlight On” is XelaWho’s regular monthly series on all things cultural & artistic in Xela and Guatemala. This month’s topic is: The Band Majuana.

The sound: Latin rock. This group of five heart-throbs calls Xela home. About 70% of their set is covers of Latin rock hits, about 30% of their music is original, and 100% of their show is a rocking good time. XelaWho went backstage with Rolando (vocalist), Alex (Latin drums), Armando (guitar), Osmar (bass), and Manuel (drums) for an interview with the band.

XelaWho: How would you describe yourselves as a band?
Majuana: We’re a band that expresses its deepest emotions. We’re a band that plays for the love of music.

XelaWho: How long have you been playing together?
Majuana:We learned all the greatest hits and started out as a cover band in 2003. More recently, we’ve written some of our own music. In 2007 we independently produced our first disc, Uno.

XelaWho: Where do you play, and when?
Majuana: We play every Saturday night at Arabe, starting at 9pm. We also have gigs in some other places, like PanaRock in Panajachel.

XelaWho: So are you full-time rock stars?
Majuana: Three of us are studying at the university, one of us is a sales manager, and yes, one of us is a full-time band member.

XelaWho: What else would you like to say to your fans out there?
Majuana: You can email us at, or search for us on hi5 and MySpace. Soon we’ll have some videos on YouTube if you search for Majuana, and possibly a video on local T.V.

XelaWho: Thanks, Majuana. We’ll see you at the next show.
